Yes
I was just about to buy the 18-105 due to its walk-a-bout zoom range, lightness and decent reviews (to go on a D90) but will I regret it as being too soft (I'm a bit of a pixel peeper unfortunately) so without getting the 17-55 DX at £850 is there something similar in zoom but much better than the 18-105 in image quality but wont break the bank? budget up to £500.
Thanks

Cheapest option - 18-70 Nikon - £300 new or £120 second hand

Good options - Tamron 17-50 or 28-75, both f2.8 depending on focal lengths needed

You can get the Nikon 17-55 for £550 ish second hand? I had this, and it is a nice lens, and aside from build quality very similar IQ to the Tamron 28-75.

18-200 can be soft, ignore most of what Ken Rockwell says!

Have a look at the 16-85mm, very good optics, well made, sharp and good range. If you want speed and willing to sacrifice range then the Tamron 17-50mm is a good lens.

Pixel-peepers and consumer lenses do not make good partners. If you are asking the question, the lens will probably never be good enough for you.

The aforementioned 17-55mm f2.8 nikon lens has absolutely amazing image quality and can be had used for less than £600. I would prefer one lens of that quality to a handful of consumer zooms.

There is always the fixed focal length lenses as cheaper options with lovely image quality, you could learn to zoom with your feet ;)

Will echo that. Using primes I think really helps your technique. It makes you think a bit more about the shot and composition does improve. Great IQ too. 50mm 1.4 G and 85mm 1.8 are £300 each and the 35mm around £170

Thanks, I've already got the 35mm and 85mm and I do like prime sharpness etc, but recently was taking family and golf pics and couldnt get any further back so had torso shots for a golf swing:thumbsdown: for any landscape shots I need the wider angle as well, this 18-200 range is ideal, why cant they make a sharp f2.8 one, we'd all pay a grand for it happily:thumbs:
