Sharpest Nikon prime?

Yes
I have a Nikon 16-85 which is very nice and good focal walkabout lens but I'd like a very sharp prime for my D90- any thoughts on whether it should be the 35mm f1.8 or 50mm f1.8 or something else? really looking for that 'keeper' prime lens that I know is tack sharp. it will also be used for general family stuff and occasional landscapes/outdoor scenes etc

thanks

sigma 50 1.4.

better that nikkors.

it the only aftermarket i use.

some say - others don't agree

to the O/P wouldn't you be better off deciding on the focal length you want, and then looking at lens options, rather then debating the sharpest (and they're all pretty damn good) cause its not the be all and end all

Zeiss 35mm f2 ZF.2! You can't to get sharper.. if its in focus!

True, but at a price!!!

Back in the real world, the Nikkor 35mm f/2 is sharper than the f/1.8 version and the Nikkor AF-D and AF-S 50mm f/1.4 are about the same as the f/1.8, maybe a wee bit sharper, but the better colour and contrast of the faster lanses makes it a clear winner. (Clear....clear...geddit? Oh, please yourselves...)

However, neither lens is any sharper than the 24-70mm f/2.8, which is simply the best lens I've ever owned...

The 50 F1.4 is said to be soft wide open... I think the 85mm F1.4 beats it hands down...

its not soft wide open.
The 85 1.4 does beat it as an 85 prime every time :) and there is something magical about the cream machine, but the 50 beats the 85 in its control of digital artifacts and its colour rendition is much more inline with the newer nikons

It`s a complete waste of time everyone plugging there top lens. Haven`t you realised yet that no two lens`s of the same size are identical. Take for instance on Photozone the Tamron 28-75 lens on Nikon and Canon get an entirely different verdict. Why this lens on a Nikon scores highest is, it was tested on a crop camera but the Canon is tested as full frame. The periphery on the Canon does leave a bit to be desired. It`s all down to "You pays your money and you takes your chance."

I use a nikkor 60mm 2.8d micro and it's very sharp plus macro to boot
