What do you think is the sharpest lens availible at the moment that is around 50mm when on a 1.6x camera. For £500 or less new.

A 50mm is 50mm on any camera... If you mean "will give me the same field of view as a 50mm lens would on a full frame" then you need to be looking at a 30mm lens.

No idea which is best though ;)
 
Any lens is going to be at its sharpest on a "crop" sensor as you will be getting the "sweetest area" from the lens falling on to your sensor.

Yes I mean has the effective reach of a 50mm on film. ie a 28mm canon
 
Depends on your budget too.
He's quoted a budget of £500 ;)

50mm lens in your budget would be the Canon 50 f1.4
The equivalent of 50mm on your crop body would be the Canon 28mm f1.8

Both of those lens come in well under budget.

Alternatively if you would consider a zoom then the 17-40L f4 is only a touch above budget...
