Been clicking away with new camera for last few days. When I look at the pics on PC they look fine. Using the software with camera (digital photo professional) photos can be tweaked and made to look even better by adjusting the "sharpness".

Is it accepted that adjusting sharpness is part of it, or is it down to lens quality, limitations etc?

Canon EOS 450D, 18 - 55mm IS.

Are you shooting jpeg or raw?

I tweak all my pictures, only small amounts but I see nothing wrong, I think it is widely done.

Of course it better to try and nail it in the camera as much as you can and then just polish it up on the computer. Rather than mess it up in the camera and try to polish a turd.

Even with a really good lens I know people who play with Photo editing etc its just part n parcel of photography.

shooting in .jpg at the moment, haven't tried Raw yet. The pictures look decent enough but turning up the sharpness makes a definite improvement.

if it improves it then do it, long as it doesn't make it look 'fake' then any enhancements I would do personally.

When I first started I didn't dare do much in case people thought it was cheating lol but think of it as part of photography now.

Same as the old film shots were processed by various techniques in the dark rooms etc, just a modern version now.

Any time you alter the size of an image you will probably need to sharpen. If I use my D700 with 24-70 or 50 f1.4 I can still get an improvement with a little sharpening so don't worry if you need to sharpen every image a little it is part of the PP process. Make sure you do not go too far though with the sharpening process as you can make them look very strange!

Hacker (Colin) has done a few tutorials which are always very good. He has done one on high pass sharpening and another about sharpening eyes to make them pop. I would have a read of them.
