Editing, compression, calibration, i.e. some of it may be a monitor limitation (either not being visible when editing/his monitor, or it's not actually in the image/my monitor). With "dark images" I find it is best to expose to the right as much as possible... a lot of the editing/compression issues are due to a lack of information recorded in darks/blacks (otherwise I don't typically mess w/ ETTR).
