I've set up a little 'booth' in my room, so am starting to experiment and have a play around

Thoughts and suggestions always welcome!

Not sure what you were aiming for there but you've got some very extreme lighting going on there. There are blown whites and blacked out sections all quite close together.

There are no wrongs and rights to this stuff but there is getting the shot you visualised or missing it. The best way to learn about these shots is to take them and experiment.

You'll struggle to get your mini in there Bean!

As for the plant - the light source is either too far away or too small a point source and is burning out the highlights, otherwise I like it

Yeah, the highlights were a problem, I thought...

But I'm just using a standard desk lamp... as I'm a cheapskate and have just spent every penny I have on a 400d

I'm just experimenting at the moment, really!! Seeing what happens with light positions, shadows etc...

Keep going - it's working well

Grease-proof paper in a U shape over an Anglepoise works well as a diffuser - if you try this, move the light just out of camera shot for the softest light
