Does anyone here shoot direct to a hard drive?

Is the camera tethered or wireless and do you use it outdoors or studio work?

Do you use it for backup or due to the large file size?

I sometimes shoot tethered, if I can. I always save a copy to the memory card though... just in case!

Usually only get to do it when I'm working on personal projects though!

Anything in the studio i shoot tethered. some location work i've used the wireless transmitter. Images are also recorded to the memory card until the works completed. For sports i just shoot to the card then transfer to the HDD at halftime and re format.

Ah,

to avoid confusion here I am talking about shooting direct to a portable hard drive not shooting to a laptop/netbook/PC with a hard drive installed.

Ahhh ok, can't help there then :D would be interested to hear if anyone does though

Not much difference between, speed/efficiency wise, that and a card is there?

I don't know but there are some advantages. I presume most togs would also use a card in the camera.

Anyone?

I'm not sure how you would do this as the data has to be transferred and then recorded. You'd need some method to handle the transfer, cheapest way is a small laptop.

The other alternative is to use a Microdrive. This was a technology developed by IBM This was a super small Hard drive packed into a Compact Flash card form. They have been largely superseded now by conventional Compact Flash cards which have more storage space, more robust and don't crash if you take them out of the reader without "ejecting" them

I have found this is possible on my Canon 1D MkIII when fitted with the WFT-E2. I have tried many hard drives but the Buffalo120GB portable will power from the camera.

This allows me to take a pic and write the image direct to the hard drive and/or any or both of the two cards in the camera. I can also backup direct to the hard drive from any of the two cards via one usb lead and no laptop.

This surley is another option for those going on holiday and needing to back up cards with very little weight involved.
