Shooting Fireworks

Looking forward to shooting some fireworks this year, even more so after seeing a few of the shots posted around the site from other peoples firework snaps.

So, has anyone got any tips on how to shoot?

I'm struggling as to how you focus, seeing as it'll be dark and you're not totally sure where the firework is going to go, which means it'll be hard to judge distance.

Do you just focus manually, roughly where you think the fireworks will go up, and hope for the best?

Any tips will be appreciated.

tips are mentioned in almost every fireworks thread as there's always someone who asks what settings are used. :)

i'll be searching for this myself soon too :)

I was told tripod + f11 + 2 second exposures.

Hi This is one from last year, I would use these settings the length of exposure varies, I watch for the fire work to start, press the shutter release, wait till its on its way out and close the shutter, use a tripod as well

Exposure: 4 sec (4)
Aperture: f/11
Focal Length:18 mm

Focus can be tricky, but depends how far away from the fireworks you are. If using my wide angle lenses at about f11 (and the fireworks are a good 100ft away) then I start at infinity and check the first shot and alter if needed.

Exposure length I find varies with what the fireworks are doing and how much info you want in the sky/foreground. Too long an exposure and you can end up with just a white mess with bits of fireworks sticking out the side.

Points taken. Cheers
