Hi guys.I think I am about to be asked to shoot the school's gym display. The photos will go on the monitor in the PE department and printed from the school colour copier... so, with no room to manoeuvre - probably sitting in a row right at the edge of the mats, how high can I bump the ISO without it being too noisy - using a 7D? Don't want to use flash as it messes with their awareness when rotating over the boxes and off the trampettes. Be interested to hear what you have to say.

Thanks
:)

Try not to worry as much about the noise. Better to have noisy photos than ones that are blurred due to subject movement. I guess you'll be unable to go lower than iso 1600 / 3200 to keep shutter speeds up. What lens are you planning to use ?

Well, I usually keep a 24-105 but was wondering if I should go fixed and faster. I could try an 85 1.8 - sometimes the kids almost land in the front row's laps!

Watch your lighting. Most gyms have flourescent, mercury vapour or sodium lights.
They all pulse at I think 50Hz( mains voltage) so your exposure will vary with the lighting pulse.
Shoot in burst mode, manual exposure, the lighting will not change (even though it pulses ), RAW and set your white balance,if you have a grey or whibal card then use that.

Thanks for that. The display which actually be in the main hall which has tungsten lighting so...??
