I shoot in JPG but i have attempted moving to RAW to have a better quality of manipulation etc etc + all the rave reviews i see in the mags. So anyway, i put it onto raw mode which is easy enough, take the photo, fine, but then when i go to look at the photo on the screen it says 'image not available' and comes out as said message on the computer, somethimes it doesn't even let me view it!

Any suggestions as to whats going on?

You need to load a codec onto your system to allow it to view the raw files and your image app may need one too.

what os and image program do you have?

Hi george, If you're shooting in raw then the file format will be .NEF which isn't natively read by Windows and other common apps (unlike .JPG). You need to import the photos into something like Adobe Bridge or my personal preference is Lightroom.

Hope that helps.

Download the codec and it is readable in windows photo gallery

Go onto Adobe website and download dng. converter. This will convert NEF files to dng. files which can be opened in photoshop. I use it - very successful

So many options.

I installed the a RAW file viewer from Microsoft I think, and it was very slow at reading files, so I'd steer clear of that.

I shoot only RAW and use a program called Preview Extractor to extract and create a copy of the embedded jpg within Nikon RAW files for easy viewing of the shots I've taken. It's worked with the D70, D200 and D300 I've had. It can be found here. It has even extracted a jpg when the RAW file has been corrupted on occasion. :)

Of course that is just for viewing, you will need other software to actually edit the RAW/.NEF files and to get the most out of the format.

Alternatively invest $20 is a copy of ToneUp S3 which is basically a third party version of Capture NX - quite good it is too
