Shooting with flash advice for a beginner

Was wondering of anyone could give me a spot of advice to the problem i encountered while trying out a spot of low light indoor flash photography.

I took a photo of 2 people, now one was wearing a light grey suit & the other a dark black suit. On viewing the photo the guy in the grey suit has for want of a better term been lit up by the flash the exposure looks fine but the guy in the black suit still looks dark, you could say sort of under exposed.

Any advice why this is happening and what i might be doing wrong.

I was useing a 450D & a Speedlite 430 EX II

I guess that the black absorbed more light than the grey and looked underexposed.

It is pretty tricky to use flash with white and black clothing (worse in the same shot ie wedding photography) but it is not impossible.

As long as you have well exposed skin tones I wouldn't get too stressed about the black areas falling into underexposure.
