currently my walkabout/short range lens is the sigma 18-50 f2.8 macro. now while i think its a fantastic little lens i was thinking of switching it out for something with USM/HSM for short range sports shots.

ideally id like to keep a similar focal length as i have 70mm upwards covered and dont really want to melt the credit card.

i was thinking about the newer sig 24-70 f2.8 with HSM, anyone use it for sports?

any other suggestions?

not used the sigma, but the Canon 24-70 or 24-105IS are superb lens'. I'd go for the 24-105, as it's sharp, quick and the IS is excellent in my experience.

What type of sports out of interest?

ditch the 24-105 for sports its f4

sigma gets rave reviews but I haven't used one, 24-70L might melt the card a bit :D

I suppose the Canon 17-55 IS USM is worth considering Neil? It certainly has a decent reputation but I'm not sure how it compares on cost.
Would something starting at 24mm be wide enough for you?

sorry completely forgot id posted this.. lol

looking into it a bit more the canon short fast L's are budget busting as is the 17-55..

sports wise i was thinking anything that i could get close enough to.. bikes, boards, rallys etc etc.

if only sigma made the 18-50 HSM across all mounts.

used my 24-70 /2.8 for rallys a lot on hairpins etc, also 17-40 (on a 1.6x)
