Short Studio Lens?

Hi All,

I have a home studio but as space is limited I find a 50mm on a 7d is just not wide enough for the full length shots of models.

Recommendations of alternative lenses anyone ?

On a budget

Primes:
Canon 24mm f/2.8
Canon 35mm f/2
Canon 28mm f/1.8
Sigma 30mm f/1.4

Zooms:
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Sigma 17/18-50 f/2.8

Big bucks

Primes:
Canon 24mm f/1.4L MkI or MkII
Canon 35mm f/1.4L

Zooms:
Canon 24-70 f/2.8L
Canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS
Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 HSM

If this is primarily a studio lens then would it be safe to assume you'll be shooting at an aperture of f/4 and smaller? If so then you may as well look at the cheapest of the options above as they should all be able to produce sharp images at that aperture given they're all f/2.8 or faster.

My choice on a APS-C camera would be the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 or Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 on a budget and the 35mm f/1.4L or 24-70 f/2.8L if I had big bucks to spend based on previous/current experience of 3 out of 4 of these lenses

5D would work perfectly there with that 50mm. That's how * I * would approach this.

Stick your 15-85 kit lens on check the focal length to get the model in 'full length' then look at some of the options already mentioned

As I remember the kit lens is reasonably sharp when stopped down as it would be with studio lights - I still have mine although use the 24/105 that came with my 5DII.

The real answer is a bigger studio!

Wide angles on people aren't too flattering, you want a slight telephoto really, and also a telephoto helps bring in the distance between your background and your subject, making it easier to fill the frame with both the subject and the background.

But walls aren't too easy to move, so the lenses listed above... it's studio, so working at high apertures, so most modern lenses will do a decent job
