Hi, sorry if it seems a bit obvious, but could anyone tell me how to get the shot/shutter count on my camera?

I can't seem to find it.

I have a Nikon D5300

On most cameras you can upload an image to a program and it will tell you the shutter count, g oog le is your friend on this one
 
You need to upload a JPEG image to one of the shutter count websites. I've used a few of them, it sometimes best to try a couple of the websites to confirm the count. A quick google will bring up a few sites.
 
In irfanview the count shows as "total pictures" for nikon, and also shows in the exif if you upload to flickr - at least it's shown in decimal notation instead of the hexadecimal notation you get with leica
 
I use Kuso exif viewer (free download) on unedited photos, must have the most data of any. when downloaded right mouse click over picture and it is there in the drop down list. click on open with Kuso, a small tick box at top of list expands data info
