Just popped a hoya lens skylight 1b on my lenses and it spins. Should they spin?

As far as I know only polarising filters come in a rotating mount.

If that is the only filter you have that rotates then suspect a faulty thread on the filter. If all filters rotate on the same lens then suspect a faulty filter thread on the lens.
As long as the filter will not fall off it is liveable with.

It's the rim that spins. I've just put it through my phone barcode scanner and it is recognised so I'm guessing it should. It's not doing any harm spinning.

I think you will be okay TBH it sounds like it was designed to spin..

The filter should be three parts. One is the glass, one is the main metal body from the thread to the frontmost edge and the last is the metal ring that screws into the main body and holds the glass in place.
If any of them can move independently the filter hasn't been put together properly and needs tightening up.

If the entire filter is moving when attached to a lens then it either isn't attached properly yet or the threads are stripped, in either case it can fall off during use.

The only filters that should spin are ones that need to be set a certain way up like polarisers and ND graduated filters.

:bonk:Now time for me to own up

I was a bit too gentle with it and didn't screw it on fully:bang::bonk::bang:

Hehehe, you've got to give it a bit of elbow grease to get a secure fit!

Not too much elbow grease, mind. Otherwise you'll never get the damn thing off!
