Should i be worried!!!

Hi, I bought a tamron 17-50 vc lens, sh off eBay last week, yesterday I was using it and it stopped working error came up on screen saying to clean lens contacts! I did this and it worked again! Is this just a problem that happens from time to time or should I get in contact with seller!!

Almost certainly just dirty contacts. If it happens again, give the contacts a good clean with an alcohol solution. Do this to your camera and other lenses too.

I have also seen the tip to use the rubber on a pencil to clean them.

White ones are just rubber and probably won't do anything to clean the contacts. Best ones are the pink or green ink erasers but use these sparingly, whilst they should remove any accumulated crud, they are abrasive ( the rubber contains fine grit!) and bits can fall off into the sensor / lens body.....
You can get proper electrical contact cleaner, I would prefer to use that with a good quality cotton bud.

I had the same with a new Canon prime the first time I used it but after a clean it's never done it again.

One of the things I like about this place. I now know things about pencil rubbers that I would never have dreamed were important pieces of knowledge.

I use such a rubber for cleaning contacts (and of course from now on will use a pink or green one - sparingly). Hold the camera above your head so bits drop out, not in, while cleaning was a good piece of advice I was given.
