Should I buy New or second hand?

I Spoke to a friend last night about SLR's, and she recommended the Sony A330 at £239.99 which is 10mg.

I know this is a discontinued model, as the newer model is the Sony A57 at £539.91. Can you tell me if Sony SLR’s are good , and if I should aim for the A330 or the A57?
 
Actually the replacement for the A330 would be the A37 which is currently ~£320 nett after claiming £50 cashback.
The 3 series are physically quite small bodies (this is either a pro or a con depending upon your hands) & therefore also use a smaller battery (still good for several hundred shots).
Sony DSLRs are fine & have the fastest Live View AF of any manufacturer if that's a concern to you.

I recommend that you get to a shop & try handling bodies in your price range from a few different manufacturers to find which finds most natural for you.

Aim For the M1, then onto the M62, then the M61, then the M6, up into Scotland and keep going

I'm a sony user and I'm pretty happy with their gear. There's also Sony's own outlet store where you can pay even less for them new.

They don't always have much in at any one time but they're usually a really good deal.

As you're starting out with sony then I'd say the newer SLT models are a better bet.

Your nearby castle cameras have the A37 with a kit lens for £370 so I'd wander down there and try it out and see how you find it. If you don't like the electronic viewfinder then Sony might not be good for you as all their range have it. I'd try that over the A330 as that is probably going to be better at higher isos than the 10 mp A330. Also try the A57 and see if it is worth the extra.
 
Can you test the secondhand camera before parting with cash ? I take it your just starting out (reading your other post) so maybe if you know someone that knows about SLR's you could get them to have a look at it . I'm a nikon user so cant say I know anything about the Sony range of SLR's but I would think if the price is right and the camera works go for it . once youve out grown the A330 you can always upgrade at a later date. I started with a very basic Nikon D40x and that kept me going for 5 years.

The main thing is to get out there with what ever kit you can and get shooting.
