OK, I'm a Mac wannabe....

A friend of mine has a Macbook Pro 3.1 A1226 (The 15" one)

It needs a new CD/DVD drive. Are these hard/expensive to replace?

They want £300 for it. Is this a reasonable price given the cd drive doesn't work?

Thanks for any help.

As far as I'm aware, you can buy replacement drives...wouldn't know how hard they are to fit though! I'd go with the external suggestion :)

If the specs are the same as the ones Google is bringing up, £300 is a good deal!

... if you don't buy it feel free to pass the person's details on to me! :p

Seriously, get it. At that price it's an absolute bargain!

Ah sorry guys, I'm definitely buying this, will be picking it up next week

It would be expensive to get Apple to replace it, you might be able to get a drive off ebay and sort it out yourself though - i'm sure theres plenty of guides online...

But as mentioned above, an external drive could be the way to go.

You could always plugin an external version, I must admit i never use mine at all.

As jayeshpp said, there is plenty of detailed guides online to perform such a swap. And I'm sure you could get another drive easily enough. Just depends if you feel competent enough to start taking apart your Mac ;)
