Should I buy this Macbook Pro?

OK, I'm a Mac wannabe....

A friend of mine has a Macbook Pro 3.1 A1226 (The 15" one)

It needs a new CD/DVD drive. Are these hard/expensive to replace?

They want £300 for it. Is this a reasonable price given the cd drive doesn't work?

If push come to shove you could always buy an external USB DVD drive and use that. Cost you about £35.

Alternatively Ring the local Apple store and inquire

As far as I'm aware, you can buy replacement drives...wouldn't know how hard they are to fit though! I'd go with the external suggestion

If the specs are the same as the ones Google is bringing up, £300 is a good deal!

But as mentioned above, an external drive could be the way to go.

Just had a look www.macupgrades.com and there are no upgrades available. I'd just get a good Firewire drive and do itt that way.

As jayeshpp said, there is plenty of detailed guides online to perform such a swap. And I'm sure you could get another drive easily enough. Just depends if you feel competent enough to start taking apart your Mac
