Hi guys.

A friend at work is selling her laptop, and to me it seems pretty nice.
Loaned it for a few days, and it's nice and quick, crisp, bright screen, all very good.

It's a Toshiba Satellite P200-143 and my question is what do you all think it's worth?
I have my price, she has hers, and I'd love to see what you think!

Would be very grateful for any input.......

Is that the exact model you linked to Andy?

Also did you read that review? It is not a very good review imho.

Also the price they quote seems to be from John Lewis, who are not the most cheapest retailer in the market.

How old is the laptop in question?

As it stands, with the basic information you have given, I would pay no more than £180

Having said that though with laptops being so cheap these days I would be more inclined to buy new rather than second hand

What are the prices you are talking about?

Ive had the P200-144 from new, its an ok laptop (cost a fortune new!!) but its big, clunky and as pointed out is easily out classed with new laptops that dont cost the earth. To be honest i was never that impressed with mine.

There are 3 in a completed items search on ebay - £200 to £260 if that helps.

Thanks for the replies guys. (Never thought of that Robert, thanks allot!!)

It's just over 2 years old. She claims it still has some warranty on it
100% mint condition.
£1150 when she bought it

It's that exact model in the link.

Been using it for a few days now, and tbh, I don't understand the bad review. Very quick, even with Vista.
Display is bright and crispy, although the sound is carp.....

She's looking for £300, I'm offering £250.

My one looks as good as it did the day i got it, i'll give it that. It very rarely crashes, its just enormous!

I know you can pay a fortune for new laptops if you want to (and yes we have done for business purposes), but £250 is way too much for this one.

Just my opinion of course...

Thanks again for the replies.

Just curious, why would £250 be way to much for it Bill?

Hi Andy, just my two penneth worth!

I have had 5 Toshiba laptops and only one has given me any bother - screen fault - Toshiba REPLACED the laptop with the newer model :-) Currently running a Equium. When you buy new you can get a Toshiba 2yr warranty extension so it may have some warranty left.

But what is any secondhand laptop worth? Hmmm, if you like it then I'd go for it but she needs to drop her price a bit mate!

Good luck!

Personally i 'd be looking to pay no more than £160 - £180 for a laptop of this spec / age - during the 3rd / 4th yrs the reliability drops dramatically on a laptop. for about £320 you can get a nice shiny new Dell.

Got to agree with the comments above! £180-200 would be my max. I am on my second tosh, and very pleased with them!!

Thanks again for the replies.

In general terms all computers have got faster, more powerful and cheaper and cheaper in price. So much so, that unless you're doing something really special, then most entry level machines will satisfy the vast majority of users. If you also accept that you're also going to be throwing whatever you buy in the nearest skip in two or three years time because something even faster and cheaper is available. It's quite a powerful argument in driving the second hand value down and down.

And I'm always wary about used laptops in particular. By their very nature they get carried around, bumped etc etc. So I'd have said perhaps £200 max. You may not agree of course and I certainly wouldn't have a problem with that Andy :)

cheers

Bill thanks for the reply.
And to everyone else who replied.

So why would it still have a few years warranty? (According to the seller)

She has treated this machine like a baby since she's had it. I know the sort of person she is, and if she says it looked after she means it.
She claims it's only left the house no more than twice, and I could believe that given it's mint condition.

Maybe she took out an extended warranty with whoever she bought it with

I'm on the side of the naysayers, at £250 it's not cheap enough to buy secondhand, another £70-£80 will buy something new with 12 months warranty, however £180 is a different matter as you're looking at £150 more to buy new so it's worth a punt.

Andy

Another thought - I just checked and my Toshiba extended warranty is not transferrable. Best check that her warranty is before you buy (unless she can handle any warranty problems for you!)

Ooh crikey. Thanks for doing that Just.

I would imagine she would handle any issues on my behalf, but certainly will check.

Thanks again mate
