Yes
In a bit of a quandry.

The 100mm 2.8L is my favorite, yet least used lens.

I have an 85mm 1.8 and I've compared portrait shots of both and the 100mm is better but no dramatically so and only when pixel peeping.

I don't have a standard zoom anymore and I do want a 24-70 2.8L but should I give up my favorite lens or will I regret it?

of course I would lose a macro lens but I can count on one hand how many times I have used the lens for macro.

Maybe instead I should lose the 85 and put the money into a pot to save for a 24-70?

anyone got rid of their fav lens because they didn't use it much then regretted it?

Yup.

I tend to be very pragmatic with my kit these days and everything has to justify its place or make way for something more useful but there are one or two decisions that don't sit well with the heart.

I would probably make all the same decisions again though as the reasoning is sound.

I'm just going through a similar thing , I've sold my 50mm f1.4 and a sigma 150mm macro and purchased a 24-70mm L (should be here tomorrow :) ) to shoot close up / macro when not using my MP-e65mm i've been using Kenko auto tubes on the Canon 85mm f1.8 which produces pretty good result.........

As Paul mentioned, maybe lose the 100mm and get an extension tube for the 85 or for the 24/70mm.

I regretted selling my 85mm lens as it was one of my best, finances though had priority. I havent replaced it yet as i have access to one, give it time and i will have one again.

The 24-70 does focus quite close and comes in handy for macro(ish) stuff. The sharpness is good through the zoom range. only downside is the bulk of it. Considerably heavier than the 100mm.

the 100 is pretty big, whats the weight of the 24-70 in comparison?

Yup. Sold my 400 f/4DO to buy a 500 which was the right lens for the time but I found myself missing the 400. After a year of searching for a suitable spec used one, I replaced it with another one but it cost me £1000 in the process as all the prices had gone up
