I currently own a Nikon D3, which is a lovely camera. I am mainly interested in travel, cultural and environmental photography. I have a big year of traveling coming up with one 3 month Adventure through Africa and several smaller trips also planned. This got me thinking about the weight of my current setup, with said camera, plus 28-70 f2.8 and 70-200 f2.8.

Although i never thought of relinquishing my D3, however after using the D700 for some time the other day, i was suddenly unsure. The picture quality was very god, obviously, and in a noticeably smaller package. As a result i have now began to seriously consider downsizing. The only major concern being that the D700 will not be able to cope with dusty conditions as well as the D3.

Downsizing would also give me the opportunity to get a second body too (a d200 perhaps).

I would some advice on this, especially if anyone as used to D700 in dusty environments.

it's a dangerous game.....

I went 1D -> 5D for the same reason, then realised that with big lenses it's still quite a hefty unit so have just (gulp) gone the whole hog and got a Leica. It's **tiny** in comparison, just dont tell the Mrs.

Pull yourself together! Stick with the D3. Surely you're used to the bulk already. I used my D3 for almost 3 weeks solid last year in France. It either had the 24-70mm or 70-200mm on all day.
It really does just become part of you and you don't notice it. In fact the only time I did notice it was when in a supermarket and the girl at the till said
"you've got a big one there" :naughty: :naughty: :D
So thats another benefit!

No its waaay too heavy to carry around, but I'll swap it for a D700 with you because I am kind :D

So, you've got a D3 and I've got a D200.... if only the wife would allow me take this any further :bonk::dummy:
