Should I convert to Canon

Right I have the following:

Sony A200 with kit lens
Sigma 28-70mm F2.8
Tamron 55-200mm (barely used)
Jessops Flash (brand new)

I have been offered a Canon 400d for £265 with the kit lens.

I realise that the Sony A200 and the 400d are both entry level but im thinking of converting for the following reasons.

- Canon fit lenses are easier to come by
- They seem to be cheaper (may be wrong on this?)
- I have friends with Canon's so could borrow lenses.
- I have heard that the ISO is much better than the Sony (could be wrong?)
- Having held the 400d, it seems to be lighter and easier to fit in hand.

The only Issue I have is that I love my Sigma 28-70 2.8 so I would need to sell this for a decent amount to be able to buy the same lens for the Canon.


Question - is it worth the swap???
 
I am not a fan of Sony to be honest

If you are going to make the swap over then you should do it before you collect a lot of glass and accessories for your Sony. The ISO is a lot better (depending on Canon model) the glass is very good and there a lot more 3rd party options too.

I have a mighty 1D for sale cheap too in the threads PLUG PLUG

My friend shoot Sony and he is always saying the IQ on mine is better than his but he has way too much expensive gear to swap over now... do it now if you're gonna do it at all

i wont weigh in on the canon vs nikon debate (for me its a no brainer! - check my sig :D)

a 400D is a great little camera, and £265 is a good price for the 400D + kit lens. I picked up a 400D body only on the forum for a friend for £200, and he bought the kit lens (IS version) on ebay for £55 brand new.
 
Well the canonites will tell you yes, the nikonians will tell you you should move to the dark side and the liberals will say buy pentax or any of the other makes, olympus etc.

Asking here will only get you an opinion based on the posters experience.

Both take good pictures but it has to be down to how you feel the canon is when you use it and whether you bbelieve it is the right thing to do.

You have some nice glass but not so much that you can't change over.
 
Hmmm im not looking to shell out too much money so I would be looking to sell my Sony kit, buy the canon and get another Sigma 28-70mm for the canon. Maybe a decentish flash

I could prob sell my stuff and put another £200 on top max......decisions decisions!!!
 
I changed from a Sony A200 (which I loved) to a Canon 40D, haven't regretted it once! Rather than take a side step, save some more dosh and upgrade....450D, 500D, 40D or even 50D. You won't regret it!! ;)
 
400D AF is very slow even with a 70-200mm f2.8 in dim light conditions and the ISO handling in my opinion is lacklustre. If I were to jump from Sony to Canon I would save up a bit more and go for a higher end model as opposed to the entry level 400d.

Originally Canon but now Nikon - however, Canon cameras are excellent.
 
400D is a great camera, I dont know much about the Sony stuff but I think unless your feeling limited by you current camera stick with it for a while and get a XXD or elder 1D a bit later.

not really apart from exotics like TS, MPE65 & ultra teles none of which are A200 or 400D budget type items

- They seem to be cheaper (may be wrong on this?)

but mostly won't be stabilised - any lens that you fit to your Sony benefits from the in-body stabilisation.
& are you taking into account s/h Minolta AF fit lenses?

jpeg wise possibly valid - post-processed RAW I doubt it

if it genuinely suits you better that's valid.
of course that doesn't guarantee that the next body after that will suit you better (in any brand). You'll probably want to move upto 40D/A700 type level & they are going to be heavier.
 
Thanks for all the replies.

I think I will stay with the Sony for now until I can afford to upgrade to something better.
Have just been looking at the Sony Alpha 450 and 500 and they seem good....body only around £500
