Yes
I go abroad on climbing holidays with my wife. Up to now she has allowed me to take the D700, it weighs a ton and so has quite an impact on luggage weight when we fly. My second body is a d70 which is considerably lighter and will be taking that in the future. My question is should i swap it for the D3000 which is even lighter and has 10m pixels compared to the D70's 6m pixels? I suspect the d70 is a better built camera.

The d70 is a better built and is compatible with all the Nikon AF Lenses wheres the D3000 is not so that could be a deciding factor....I would stick with the D70 myself as a backup camera or pick a used D80 up

yes it still takes grear pics and one day you might convert it to infrared

You don't pack the D700 in hold luggage do you?

D5000 if I were you. If you want it lighter then go all the way, and not compromise so much on IQ. 6mp is really low, and ISO performance is not that great. Otherwise D700 is not really that heavy!
