Should I use inherited OLD lenses?

My lovely dad has donated a wide angle and a zoom Olympus lens to me! They're manually operated, SLR lenses, and I have a Canon 5D. I think I can buy an adaptor to make them fit, would you use them?
 
Yup.

I have some Olympus OM prime lenses and they work well on my 5D. You can get adapters from £5 on ebay so for that price you can't really go wrong.

You can even get adapters with focus confirmation.
 
Definitely.

I have inherited some pre AI Nikon lenses from my father. I mainly use them with his two Nikon F bodies but I have also been using them on a D3200.

it beeps /flashes a focus point when the focus is correct
 
Great! I'm not sure if the lenses are OM, is that important?
 
Yes, just do a search for the adapter you want and add "with focus confirmation" and you may get some results.

OM to Eos with FC seem to be £15+, but I don;t know if OM is what you have. Obviously check you're looking at the right one before ordering.

Yes. You need to get the right adapter.

If you're not sure post the lens model number and a picture of the lenses and I'm sure somone will know.

if they are olympus manual lenses they are pretty much bound to be OM - unless they are screw thread in whicxh case they are probably M42

it doesnt matter much which but you dop need to make sure you get the right adaptor - if you post a pic of one showing the lens mount someone will be able to confirm
 
Ah yes, the wide angle is 28-50mm and says OM on the mount. The mount cap says Olympus but the lens ridge just behind the glass says Bell & Howell?
The other is 80-200, again the mount cap says Olympus but the lens says Hoya Skylight (1a) (they both say skylight on them actually), the mount doesn't say anything on it....I'm guessing it isn't Olympus and wouldn't be compatible with the Olympus lens adaptor?

They're covered in dust too.
 
Hoya skylight 1a is a filter screwed to the front of the lens, not the lens itself - the first one is definitely an OM , so if they are from the same camera therrs a near certainty that the second one will also be OM

Aah a filter I see! Silly me.

Can I clean them up? There's dust everywhere.
 
for starters take the filters off the front - if they've been on there for the whole life of the lens the front element might be pristine

if theres dust on the rear or front element then blow it off with a rocket blower

and give the rest of the lens a gentle wipe down with a soft cloth
 
Thanks, I'm so chuffed to have them (and the camera), they're the same age as me! When I got the camera with a lens on, out of the leather case, half of the case had disintegrated!
 
So you've got the film SLR as well - even better - the OM SLRS are great , which one is it ?

you might need to get a new battery for the meter - but that will be pennies on ebay

and you can get film in poundland
 
It's the OM 40 if that means anything to you! It's a little alien to me!
