Internet examples are nearly always misleading because pixel density is not taken into account. I can assure you that shooting on RAW the 5DII is at least a stop and a half better BEFORE pixel density is taken into account. This is a stunning result.

Not quite sure I understand what you mean.

I know that higher pixel density can result in higher noise levels (everything else being equal) because the photodiodes are smaller.

However I was going by the results which I could see.

Are you saying that the resolution of the 5DII at 3200 ISO is better than the 1DsII because the site seems to suggest the opposite.

I've seen images from the 1dsII and the 5dII side by side in real life images and the 5dII was noticeably cleaner at 1600.

That's exactly what I said, because the 5DII applies more in camera noise reduction, but I was more interested in the resolution at 1600 and 3200 ISO because I can use out of camera NR programs

I shoot with the noise reduction turned off because I prefer to manage it in onone or lightroom, I know that there's still some jiggery pokery going on inside with the image but I can't control that. But as I said, side by side with settings matched as much as possible between the bodies, the 5d2 was cleaner.

Are we talking about the same thing?

By "clean" do you mean less noise or better resolution or a combination of both?

The majority of the shooting I do is in dimmly lit clubs, it was the real life images that tempted me to move sideways to the mk2 from the 5d1 instead of going the 1d/s route.

Dark areas of the image where noise shows up were visibly cleaner.

Only RAW output is relevant. Regarding pixel density, unless the images you see have been suitably adjusted to account for this you will be seeing false results. This is why the 12mp D700 looks so much better than the 5DII at high ISO. There is so much more resolution with the 5 that you are simply CLOSER to the noise at 100%.
