Should I wait? 5D mkiii

About to cough up for a new 5D mkii kit, just wondering if it wouldnt be better to wait for the 5D mkiii announcement or Nikons new announcements, some say theyre likely to come end of September due to the pattern in product cycles.

Dont want to buy now, regret it in a month and find out the mkiii is the same price as the mkii with much? better features. This would also have a knock on effect on the resale value of the mkii.

Thanks for any advice.

The 5D2 is a lot of money to invest in if there is a replacement due soon. But, and this is a big but, no one knows when it will be due. Canon rumours suggest that it may be coming out in 2012. Personally, I would invest in a good used 5D2 from a shop where you can get some sort of warrantee. Then if a 5D3 does come out and you decide you require some of the features you can sell the 5D2 for a minor loss and get the 5D3.

I'm not sure when Nikon and Canon will release the new cameras. No press release for either company, so if rumor are true about the release of new cameras in september, then i guess you won't be able to buy the camera till November or December? Price for the cameras will be unsure as well.

Thanks, Ive been looking at used 5D2 and to be honest for the extra £100-£150 or so I may aswell get a new one. I think it would be more than a minor loss though, probably more like £300-400. Its so annoying as now that I can finally afford one its pretty much about to be replaced. £2.5k is a lot to spend only to lose a large chunk when updating.

Thanks freefall, will try obtain a price. What are peoples thoughts on getting a 5D as a stop gap? Is the screen really that bad?

The IQ of the 5D is classic is still brilliant and puts my croppers to shame :) Personally, I'm going to wait for the 5D III to come out and buy a (hopefully!) vastly reduced used 5D MK II instead ;)

The screen on the 5D classic is really terrible however! You have to trust that your shots are good really :D

Thats my thinking but Ill be stuck without a DSLR. Although I have a NEX.

Pity about the screen, otherwise I wouldve gotten one. Im not nearly good enough to know my shots are going to be good without reviewing/reshooting.

I actually got a 5D rather than a 5D2 as I didn't have a camera at the time so needed to get something. My plan being to see what the next Canon FF offering is and go from there.

When the new camera comes out it will not be the same price as a 5D2 is now, probably at least £1k more to start with and for what I do, if the new camera upgrades from the 9 point AF I can't see how it would be that much better than the 5D2, which will hopefully drop in price then the new camera comes out.

But how long are you going to be waiting for? After getting my 24-70 just before xmas I started saving for a 5d. I was keen to keep up to date with canonrumors in case the mk3 was coming, but in May the best rumour said Sep 2011 if you are lucky. Then the quake hit. I got the cash in May and bought it then. Still now the rumours are saying Q1 2012, which you know will be 1 day before Q2 2012 at this rate. But they are just rumours.

You can still get high prices for used 5DMKII's and if it was me I would not mind selling mine after 3 moths exceptional service and losing a few quid if a new one came out and I wanted it badly.

The thing with waiting is no one knows when the new model will come out. Even when it's announced in wont be in the shops for weeks or even months and the first people to get one will pay waaaaaay over the top and there's always the worry that Canon may be true to form and release the new model with whatever the bug of the day is like black spot syndrome or something... so maybe it's best to wait until availability improves and bugs are sorted.

Could be months really. Best buy a 5D/5DII :)

You will always have this problem when buying a new body. Just get one and get on with it - will still take great pictures.

The 5DII is an awesome camera and I dont think you'd regret buying it.
When the replacement comes out it will be in high demand and highly priced ;)

hmmm still thinking of using a 5D classic as a stop gap as Id imagine if I find a mint one itll hold its value within a £100 difference at most?

Read about the improved LCD after 2007, anyone confirm?

Mine has the newer screen (2xxxxx serial). Perhaps using the 60d and nex has made me too critical of the low res screen! For me it is important to see how sharp my images are, as I shoot with mf lenses. If you just want to check composition and histograms, then you'll be fine. It really is a great camera :)

If you follow the logic 1Ds3 replacement will come first and hopefully very soon. 5DII replacement may be a bit later in 2012.

I'd just get 5D classic or better 1DsII for now. They are good cameras with brilliant output; screen really DOESN'T MATTER. 5DII has slightly improved IQ, but otherwise it is just a shadow of 1DsII. Hopefully 5DIII will go some way at addressing these shortcomings if I am to consider one rather than the to-be-much-cheaper 1DsIII.

If I was you i'd just buy the 5dmk2... Yes a new one will be out soon but its a brilliant camera even if a new one comes out. Its got the iso level of the D3 and video on it is different class... Plus paired with a 85 1.2 its unreal.

That's a bold statement. The biggest difference is the vastly improved ISO performance of the 5DII over the 1DSII and the much better screen AND a much improved usability. At ISO 100 there is little to choose and the 1 series has much better af, but I'd still choose a used 5II over a used 1DSII because of the IQ.

When the 5D MK III comes out you're better off waiting and getting the 5D MK IV for the improved features although rumour has it that the 5D MK IX is going to be a beast of a camera. You could also think about getting the 1 Ds MK IX.

Alternatively just get the current model and get out and enjoy using it. There's always a better model just around the corner.

Trust me there will always be a better camera around the corner. I think the only sensible way to buy camera equipment is to buy at least one generation behind the curve, otherwise you pay way over the odds.

So that would be a 5D now, followed by the 5D MKII in the next 12 months, then he 5D MKIII in around three years.

Now if I could only follow my own advice ;-)

Know what you mean gingerweasel, Im usually a sucker for the latest toys but this time Id like to be "sensible".

I also agree with the other above post to a certain point, you can wait forever if you wait for the newer model, but when a new version is around the corner paying that much for the then older model may be a little silly.

I wouldn't say vastly improved ISO performance. Both perform very [equally] decently at ISO1600, and then 5D takes over, which is only important if you are shooting in complete darkness. 5DII also wins for video :gag: and battery life.

1D/s completely trashes 5D for AF, weathersealing (want to shoot in the rain, take the camera down low in a beach, go to Iceland?, Morocco?), build quality, higher fps, much faster camera response, higher flash sync speed, dual cards and so on. I honestly chose 1DsII over 5DII as my main camera and do not regret it.

What you hoping for in the MKIII and would you pay an extra $$$ for it? I assume it will be expensive when it does come out.

I don't think you can go wrong with an original 5D classic & invest in some nice lenses ready for when the MKIII comes out. You won't loose that much money on a classic either.

Its easy to get wrapped up in all the new features (myself included) but at the end of the day you can get superb results with any of the older equipment mentioned.

I'm sorry, but with all due respect that is nonsense. The 5DII utterly trounces the 1DSII at ISO 1600.

Im pretty much sold on the 5D classic, have had a wanted up for a day already and still no replies, getting impatient as moneys burning a hole in my pocket now. Seems whenever I post a wanted I miss the stuff thats for sale or somehow theres nothing available at the time till immediately after I buy something else :(

I was kind of in the same boat like you 1-2 month ago. I was thinking about upgrading my Nikon D5000 body to something else. I had 2 choice in mind at that time which is a D7000 and D300s. I was waiting for the D300s replacement to release so i can get something like a D400 but i just can't wait because their is no firm release date from Nikon so i just gone for the D7000 instead. I know by the time the pro camera replacement release it will be awhile.

So my advise to you was even if the 5d mkiii came out the mkii is still a cracking camera .........

How much you wanting to pay for one? I know they pop up on the other forum (canon photography) and are a few onsale right now. Dont think the condition of them is fantastic so depends if this is important to you.

Amen (serial# starting with 3 here). I switched my shooting profile to monochrome, which allows a little more judging. This only works in Raw modus, if you're after colour images, otherwise you'll get monochrome jpegs.

Would ideally prefer one in good condition, can you pm me a link please?

thanks

Just sent it to you.

Don't see any issues with my LCD on the 5D??? Serial starts with 2 and is fine.

A while ago I wanted to upgrade my 450D to a FF camera and checked out the 5DII but I often use high ISO and found that higher NR was applied to the 5dII even when it was "off" resulting in lower resolution at high ISO.

This was due to it being a prosumer type of camera so I started checking out other FF cameras and eventually got a 1DsII from the classifieds on here.

The resolution at high ISO is better than the 5DII because less NR is applied.

I use Neat Image to reduce the noise and am very happy with the results.

I agree about the screen on the 1DsII, but have never worried about it since I use it mainly for the histogram and "blinkies".

And I got my 1DsII at a vast saving over the 5DII which I was planning to buy new.

Are you using jpegs?

All the stuff I read suggest that a mk 3 won't be out until Feb next year, thats a long time to put off buying something.

I'm more than happy with the majority of the features of my 5d2, the lcd is spot on and the only thing that will make me change the camera is a better AF system.

For a camera with such tremendous high iso performance it's focusing system is primitive.

That was my 1DSII you bought, Peter. :)

I'm not saying it's anything other than a great camera, but at high ISO the 5DII is better. I only ever shoot RAW so nr is irrelevant.

Hi and yes it is a great camera - have taken over 6000 shots since I got it and it's still going strong - can't believe how light my 350D feels now and how small!

But when I compared the high ISO performances here:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1dsmkii/page19.asp

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos5dmarkii/page21.asp

The 1DsII definitely came out better at 1600 and 3200 ISO.

In fact in normal practice this difference may not be noticeable but when using Neat Image to reduce noise at high ISO the higher resolution starts to count for quite a lot since it helps to preserve much greater detail in things like bird feathers etc.

And since I often shoot at high ISO this was the deciding factor for me.

Internet examples are nearly always misleading because pixel density is not taken into account. I can assure you that shooting on RAW the 5DII is at least a stop and a half better BEFORE pixel density is taken into account. This is a stunning result.
