Hi

Am in the middle of creating a showreel for this year. Was going to make it roughly 3-4 minutes long, but then read that its recommended to have a showreel 2 minutes long max, and again have read multiple articles say 30-45 seconds is best. What's everyones take on this?

Thanks!

who're your clients? Are you pitching to clients for complete productions, or as a camera operator, or...?

Three to four minutes is way too long, you could manage two minutes if you have some really engaging content but, it's very difficult to hold someones attention for two minutes, especially when they're searching for a service.

Make it as short as you can while still getting your message across, using just key and unique selling points should allow you to keep it short.

Clients for complete productions.
show what they care about then, and nothing else. The shinier the better, and do your best not to get emotionally attached to a particular shot or location etc. 45seconds is probably too short, 4mins probably too long...

Is it unusual to have 2 showreels? A general one with all work and another which is more specialised for a particular type of client?

I've seen some (generally the busier) production companies with a load of different showreels, tailored towards each particular niche business area (eg: commercials, event, corporate)
