Shutter count

I hadn't really thought about this until coming across it on the Nikon website (ok I'm sure most of you knew already!) but there is obviously no way to be certain about a cameras shutter count, particularly with older cameras:-

There is no way to accurately tell the total number of times your camera shutter has released. While there are third party software applications designed to read a cameras shutter count, this number is not always accurate because the shutter release times may be reset by firmware updates, or reset in the Service department if certain parts are replaced or other operations are performed.

So maybe when buying a 2nd hand camera the questions ought to be:-

• What is the shutter count?
• Has it had a firmware update from new?
• What was the shutter count before the firmware update?
• Have any repairs affected the shutter count?

I've never had a reset because of a firmware update in any of my bodies.

Updated firmware on both my Nikons and neither reset.

But you raise some good points about 'history', although if it's had several users then the history may have been lost or be unknown, unless there are reciepts etc....
