A number of months ago I bought a Nikon D80 from Ffordes as a back-up to my D90.
When I check the shutter count from the image they sent me before I bought the camera it states 1666. I can't remember the quoted shutter count but it was quite a bit higher.
How reliable is the EXIF shutter count information?
 
Nikon says it's infallible. However, I've known them to be reset. I believe there's also another counter in an area of memory only a service department can access. Ffordes are the kind of people who would have records of what they sold you.

I managed to reset a D3s, I think by changing the internal battery
