Hello, rookie question, what are shutter counts? Does the camera need a new part when they reach high figures? sorry if this is a silly question! I'm looking at a few canons on eBay.

shutters have a rated life dependent on camera (spec ie consumer, semi pro, pro) some are 80,000 some 150,000 and some 300,000, but you might buy a camera rated for 100,000 but it might only last 20,000 but then it might last 180,000,
But the lower the shutter count the better. if the shutter goes it aint cheep, if you buy a £400 dslr and it goes it might cost £350 for a new one(not worth it).
if you buy a £2000 dslr and it goes it might cost £450 but its worth it.
there are programs you can downlaod that can tell you shutter count if they send you an original photo.

just to add to the problem, some 1D series camera's can and some can't.

the classic 5d can't the 5d2 can :D

I wouldn't be put off by anything other than rather high shutter counts as it is something of a lottery. It's one of those things that forums often make a big deal out unnecessarily.

When I bought my 40D it had 2800 on it and was slightly under the normal going rate for examples with more use so I was quite pleased, but it ended up failing at 18000 or so anyway and cost £156.50 to get it repaired (in February of this year). I got over 20000 out of my 450D which, if you trust the numbers people normally come out with, should have lasted for less shutter actuations.

Depends on the processor, have you tried eosinfo on your 20D ?

The 1d3 I believe has the same prcessor as the 5d classic hence can't be read.

All the hype about uploading a picture to websites or looking in exif data isn't exactly accurate either.

An image only has data for pictures taken in the exif and doesn't include tethered shots or practice shots without cards.

I think the major thing when buying s/h boils down to condition, has it been battered to death, does it have damage on the corners etc.

As a pro you'd expect a camera to be bullied, battered, and bruised.

All my camera's are minty due to me being able to take just a little more time looking after them.

probably, i tried all suggestions about 12-18 months ago and none worked.
