Shutter problem? Maybe?

Hi all

I've tried searching the forum for any problems similar to mine but with no luck, I've decided to post.

Today my 550d took a big hit and now it has stopped working. I am trying to figure out what the problem is. It still takes photos (see below) but when I hit the display/movie button, I get 'error 30' on screen. I've taken the battery/sd card out and waited with no improvements. The mirror looks fine so I'm thinking it's a shutter problem.

Has anyone got any previous knowledge on something like this and could offer any advice? (I will be taking it to a repair shop tomorrow, was just hoping to get an idea of what the problem could be before hand).

Many Thanks

This photo only shows the bottom ~1/16 of what it is meant to.

That does indeed look like a shutter problem. It appears that the shutter is not opening properly, cutting off most of the exposure from the sensor. If you put the camera in to sensor cleaning mode, when the mirror flips out of the way, the shutter should also be fully open to give you access to the sensor. If it isn't, it confirms the diagnosis.

Yeah spot on. The shutter doesn't open properly and leave a small gap at the top.

hi Irecently sent my 50d to a canon repairers in Colchester, for a new shutter which had the same systems as yours also for a complete overall/ service. This came to £166. Hope this helps? Mike

Thanks for that MDB2 :).
I was expecting a price around that. I'll see what my insurance excess is like.
Will probably have a go at replacing the shutter when I have a free next.

If anyone else has any more info, it'll be more than welcome.
