I am looking to get a shutter release for my Nikon d80.

There seems to be a lot of third party brands that are compatible with Nikon DSLRs aswell as Nikons own.

Which in your opinion are the best? Wireless or corded?

What do you recommend?

I have the cheapo wireless trigger for my d5100, it does what its meant to.. work.
 
I use this corded shutter release MC-DC1 think its a cheaper brand but has never let me down. I also have the wireless remote shutter release but tend to use the corded one the most.
 
The cheapo ones you get on ebay are surprisingly good. The wired ones with intervalometer are handy too for timelapse and stuff - about £20 on ebay - search for D80 timer remote and loads will pop up

I agree with Jules, look on ebay and you'll find one for about £1:50 and they are excellent value.
 
Well I've had a plain old Nikon ML-L2 (now the L3) for 6 years and it's never let me down. You can pick them up for <£20.
 
I use a trigger trap and hook it up to my mobile phone, lots of additional functions as well...
 
yes nikon d7000 works fine
 
I have both corded and cordless releases for my D700. Since I got the cordless one, the corded has sat in a drawer. Any physical link between the photographer and the camera can introduce movement (I've seen a rig crash to the ground when the photographer turned around while holding his corded remote. He swore. Loudly and inventively!)

IIRC, my releases are both Hama ones - a lot cheaper than Nikon ones and work fine for me.

Question to both with the wireless ones do they work if you are behind the camera? I've read that they work better if your facing the camera.

Depends on where the sensor for the remote is. My D5100 has one on the rear and on the front and works fine from either side, my D50 (not so far from the D80 in age) had one on the front only and could only be made to work by reaching round with the remote. Looking at a picture of the D80, I only see the card access light on the rear so I suspect that any IR remote is going to work best from the front and may or may not work from the rear depending on the time of day, the number of letters in the name of the month and the star sign of the photographer.

If the wireless remote is an IR one, it will work best from in front (or reaching around). My camera has a 10 pin socket on the front, into which I plug a radio receiver which leaves me able to get a long way away at any angle and keep control of the shutter. It's possible to buy or bodge (think dental mirror and gaffer tape) some sort of reflector to allow IR control from behind the camera but IMO, the radio system is far better.
 
Page 117 of the D80's manual will tell you which remotes can be used - available HERE (Click Me) if you never had or can't find your copy. Not sure if there are any 3rd party radio systems which use the cable port - maybe a D80 expert will be able to help.
 
i use a 7dayshop wireless remote ( NOT IR ) that came with both the 10pin and the square options cable for the D7000, it was meant as a remote flash trigger but the little cable that come with it acts as a camera trigger( don't know about 10 pin one, D7000 doesn't use it). The unit works up to 100M ( so they say) and if you buy extra slave units you can trigger any number of manual flash units.

I did exactly this when I killed my D7000 and my Siggy 10-20 :shake:
 
I use the Yongnuo YN-126 wireless remote for my D700 which gives you a 200m range.... Mmmmmmmm noty that I would my gear that far away from me, but that I can use from behind the camera.... They do one for the D80 Yongnuo YN-126 N2 ... But each to our own devices as they say :p
