I'm looking at a Canon infra-red shutter release remote. Someone mentioned to me that there's a delay in the cameras shutter going off after you've pressed the remote. Does anyone know how true this is? And would you recommend one with a cable or the infra-red one?

I think the delay comes from how it's set. The one I had could be set for immediate release or have a 2 second delay. I could never work out the need for the 2 second delay setting and never used it, unless maybe it's to give you time to move your hand out of the position you press it from if you're in a group shot. Most of the time I used mine from the side to get the shot, without me in it.
 
Personally, I would try to find a radio type release rather than a cable or IR one, my reasons being far greater range available, no need to be in front of the camera, no long cable to trip over/get pulled.
 
+1 for that radio type release, i bought one and couldn't be happier, and i never look back to those IR remote since i had one for my 350D back in 2006.

Cable every day of the week. I have an ir one and you cant use them for bulb mode and the batteries are always flat! O and alot of cameras ir sensors are on the front of the body

I'll definitely have a look at the radio type ones and see what's around.

I suppose theres pros and cons for all equipment. (where ir sensor is on camera/cables to get in way etc).

Still not sure what I'll go for yet but it's all food for thought.

To be honest as has been said if you want cable free its gotta be wireless, the IR triggers are utterly useless piles of uselessness I've either used or handled almost every time of shutter trigger going and the ones I've seen and had the most trouble with is the IR triggers communication with them is nearly always an issue and they just don't work well...the only use a IR has is for self/family portraits where the person firing the camera is also in front of the camera in the line up

So if you want wireless the one I own and think is very impressive is the Hanel Giga T Pro 2 its not the cheapest but its functional, reliable and well made

The key question is though what situations are you looking to use the tigger for?

Thanks for all of the replies. I'll certainly look into both the wired and the radio ones. I've managed to borrow an IR canon remote for the weekend as I was too late to order anything in time.
In answer to one of my questions above (just incase you were wondering!...) you can set this one to immediate release or with a 2 second delay.

I'll see how I get on with it over the weekend.
