Yes
I have just upgraded from a 400D to a 40D. My 400D seemed to have a clean crisp shutter click where as the 40D is more of a clunk?? Is this OK? :amstupid:

That's the sound of quality moving parts :)

My 50D makes the same noise.

lol 400d shutters are made of plastic and cheese (I remember mine) 50/40d shutters are made of steel, 1d shutters are made from bits of battleship

:D

Don't worry about the shutter noise, I am sure it's normal. Not once when looking at a great shot I have thought to myself, "wow, that's amazing, I wonder how the shutter sounded when he/she took that!"

Isn't the shutter sound actually the mirror slaping back? Thats why there is no shutter shound on hybrids/compacts as there is no mirror, though there is a recorded sound of a shutter that is used so you know you have pressed the button.

They all vary a little, the 450D sounds like someone just slapped a mouse!

Compacts have an 'electronic' shutter so it just turns the sensor on and off again, whereas SLRs have both the mirror and the physical shutter :)

LOL:D

Just worrying and being extra cautious with my new purchase :bonk:

Thanks for the reassurance

At least you get a clunk, there is something solid sounding about that, my 5D sounds like a sneeze. My 1D II is a nice sound though, like hundreds of teeny tiny locks all clicking at the exact same moment.:)

You haven't heard the noise of a shutter till you have had a 20D

Pentax 645, anyone? The mirrors in those used to be used by photography lecturers to give slacking students a slap!

This is brilliant, and I laughed out loud on reading this. It's so true though, I own one of these and can vouch for it really sounding like that.

My A200 has quite a loud shutter which to me is just reassuring. When I got my A700 it was much quieter and I didn't like it as much. I much prefer a loud snappy shutter.

I've been using my 30D today about 1.5 m from the garden birds, and as soon as I hit the shutter, the 5fps gives them a fright!

i noticed the difference in shutter sound between my D40 and D90 definitely
