1/2000 freezing birds in flight
1/1000 freezing cars and fast vehicles
1/500 freezing mountain bikes, runners and athletes
1/250 freezing slow moving animals or people walking
1/125 panning cars and other fast moving vehicles
1/60 panning mountain bikes close to the camera
1/30 panning fast moving cyclists at a distance
1/15 panning runners, kids or moving animals
1/8 blurring fast flowing water close to the camera
1/4 blurring people walking
1/2 blurring slow moving water

Thanks Neil for that useful info.

As a rule of thumb, it compares to 85mm for portraits.;) (you had to be there)

On a serious note, I'm sure it'll help some people quite a bit.

Isn't the 85mm exclusively the lens for use in portraits?

I was under the impression it was. This article is a good rule of thumb though thanks.

lolololol

@the OP, I'm sure a lot of people will find a quick reference guide like that useful. When you're getting into DSLRs all those numbers become a bit of a blur!
