Righto, finally got my hands on a B+W 110 ND filter today thanks to EdBray...

Had a quick play this morning and in my dazed and tired state couldn't work out why when I thought I had lowered shutter speed by 10 stops I was getting an all black picture... I quickly realised each "turn" of the wheel was only 1/3 stop! Is it possible to set a 50D so it alters in full stops?

Also, those in the know... before I use the thing for real can I just check im going about it the right way... I select F8, ISO 100 and see what shutter speed it selects, stick the 10 stop on front, stick it in manual and slow it down 10 stops... am I missing anything? :bonk:

Cheers!

I just multiply the metered shutter speed by 1000 to get in the right area and compensate accordingly.

Custom Function 1 allows you to choose to half-stop or one-third stop EV increments, but not full stops. Half-stops are certainly simpler to deal with when you're making big adjustments.

I have my 5D set up for half-stops when I'm shooting in manual mode to make easier to maintain an EV while adjusting speed/aperture settings.
