AS Unit 2 project this year I choose the topic question of ‘Experimental Techniques’.

Ive investigated a few different ways of approaching this question so far, but have sort of came down the route of playing and experimenting with different effects created by long and quick shutter speeds.

So far I have done the following;
- Smoke photography : (Have tied this in to a quick shutter speed ‘freezing motion’)
- Stopping cards in mid flight : (Like the following- link)
- Light graffiti : (Inside, aswell as out)
- Ghost effects

Just wondering if anyone has any other suggestions? Got the 5 hour exam on Tuesday and wanting to hopefully take my project to the next level.

The possibilities are endless... You could create contrasting images of the same thing, eg. flash some smoke to capture it clearly, then dim the lights to blur it.

There's moving water, or you could move the camera rather than the subject to get some interesting effects...

Things dropping into water? A bit of a cliche but useful for what you are doing...

Exploding things?

Ultra slow panning shots of moving things? (motorsport features a fair few of these)

Light trails of cars? Laser pointer painting?

Welding glass - use it to get some mad looking cloud movements in a landscape?

I’ve always wished to do this. Is it tricky taking a photo at exactly the right moment with a normal SLR camera and no extra special equipment?

The way it's often done is to shoot in a dark room and leave the shutter open for a few seconds. The trick is getting the flash to fire at the right time to freeze the movement. A chap I know usually does this with optical or audio triggers. They can be bought pretty cheaply I think.

by 'ghost effects' do you mean like this?

I do. I had an idea that I thought may look quite effective. I asked someone to lie in the middle of the road like they had been hit by a car, and for someone else to stand over them for half the exposure time. Thought it may create a interesting image.

You could have asked them to stand over themselves ;)
Then it would REALLY look scary. In fact... thats given me an idea!

Dunno if this helps

Effective shutter speed of the eye is around 1/20sec. Any shutter speed significantly longer/shorter than that will record an image that the eye cannot normally detect or visualise.

Eg freezing high speed movement that is invisible to the naked eye - birds/insect wings, water droplets, bursting ballons. Use flash. Or very long exposures that record movement in a way that cannot be visualised normally, such as milky seascapes, misty waterfalls/fountains, blurred clouds, making cars or pedestrians disappear.

Sort of did that, just didn’t come out very well. Need to pick a better location and reshoot.

Nice idea. I agree i needs another loction. Maybe you could also try merging a couple of shots together to avoid that blur from your subject getting up?

yep, although the blur works as its more ghostly, but I still would use more than one exposure so that the body on the floor doesn't become seethrough.
