Hi I seen lots of posts about shuttercounts just curious how you measure it?
I use my 40D quite a lot . I'm not worried about failure, I would just get it fixed if it did go wrong am just curious how many pics I've taken:)
I assume you connect up the camera and link it to a PC but I'm very nervous about connecting my 40D to the internet

Thanks very much paul easy peasy :)
It was just a matter of downloading a program and connecting up the 40D to the pc, for some reason I thought you had to connect the camera to a website:bonk:
The shuttercount was 47162 higher than I thought but I do use the 40D a lot:)

You can also use flickr so you don't have to download any software. Upload a JPEG and check the details on the right hand side.

I expect there is an obvious listing somewhere, but is there a minimum activation life expectancy for various makes/models of DSLR?

Hi I dont think there's a minimum life expectancy as things can go wrong at any time but the 400D / 450D series is rated at 50000 and the 40D / 50D series 100000 as an average shuttercount
I would not worry about it my old 350D is still going strong :)

Ive just used this prog and it reports 3644 activations. I bought my 40D second hand and the image counter had not been reset. The last image number off the camera is 7,046. Is there any reason Im missing for this or is this prog not very accurate ?

From the site:-

The software reports that I've taken 1234 pictures, but the last image on my CF card is numbered 4999 (i.e., the number reported is lower than the last image on the CF card). Why?
You may have used the CF card on more than one camera, and the other camera's images were numbered higher. DSLRs typically name image files by grabbing the highest image number on the card and incrementing by one.

And alongside that snippet, imo it's worthwhile always formatting your memory card after you insert it into your camera, e.g. after you've transferred the images to your computer - it only takes a few seconds to do! There's nothing worse than spending time & effort shooting a load of photographs only to find that they've been lost due to file corruption :bonk:
