Hi all

I'm after a 1.4x converter to use with my 135L and my 70-200. I don't use converters often so I thought I'd save cash and explore some 3rd party ones.

I picked up a Sigma 2nd hand today from a local shop and was really disappointed with the results - they'll give me the money back no problem, but I was surprised - nothing was very sharp wide open (f/2.8 on the 135L), although much better at f/4.0 and great by f/5.6.

Even at f/4.0, but especially at f/2.8 there was a foggy low-contrast feel to the whole image and horrendous CA near brighter areas.

I've given it back and currently playing with a Kenko which seems much better (although possibly a little soft at the edges)

Has anyone else experienced issues with the Sigma 1.4x? In the shop they said they had heard some reports of it being a good match for Sigma lenses, but not great with other lenses.

I use one on my Sigma 150-500 and not experienced any problems. Any TC is going to degrade the IQ to some extent, closing down 1 stop usually improves things.

k - Thanks! I guess I'm interested in comparing to the Canon 1.4x.

I used to have one & I should dig out some shots, but here is what I'm not happy about with the Sigma. This is about 1/3 of the frame - note the horrible halation around her foot! I ought to mention her foot is exactly in the middle of the uncropped frame, where you might expect maximum sharpness!

I use a Kenco 1.4 300 Pro TC, on both my 70-200f2.8 and my 300f4 lens with good results.
 
I have both a Sigma 1.4x EX DG and a Kenko Teleplus Pro 1.4x DGX and in my own back to back testing the Kenko wins every time. When I say wins, I mean I always prefer the images delivered by the Kenko and that's WITH Sigma lenses, namely:

Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 EX, 70-200 f2.8 APO EX and a Bigma. Looks like the Siggy will be leaving the building......
