Sigma 10-20 for group portraits?

I've got to do a group portrait for 15 people at the weekend, probably five across and three deep. I'd usually use the 18-135mm for something like this but I also have a Sigma 10-20 which I haven't actually got round to using yet. Would this be suitable for a large group shot or will it create too much distortion?

If you're planning to use the 10-20 at 10mm then those on the peripheryof the group will look a bit odd.....

For 15 people on a cropped sensor? I'd have to stand pretty far back for that!

I was thinking more of around 15mm?

You didn`t say if it was inside or out or if there would be room.
For full frame I would go for about 70mm, I probably wouldn`t use much less than 50mm for a 1.6x crop. !5mm is still way too wide. :)

Problem is it's inside and I don't know how much room I've got yet, which is why I was going to take the 18-135 so I've pretty much got it covered, plus it's a pretty sharp lens. Was thinking of something different with the Sigma but doesn't seem like it's worth it.

The way I learned many years ago with film cameras, anything less than your natural feild of view has to distort the image, because you`re getting more in than the eye can see. It always made good sense to me. But there`s nowt wrong with trying something. :)

on a crop like your D90 I'd go for 30mm for a group portrait. I've used mt Sigma 30 for 10-15 people indoors and it works just fine. No way you would need anything wider than 25mm!!!

Definitely too much distortion. Be good fun to use it after capturing the conventional picture though. Sometime fun pictures are well received !

Depends on the look you are going for. I personally love the perspective distortion the Sigma gives, and PD is used aplenty to create effects in movies or photoshoots. Go wild!

As a fun shot use 10mm with the tallest people at the edge with shortest in the middle :D

Here are some examples of Sigma 10-20 distortion:

318 270 gets the wangle treatment.

It can be worse than that... check this out... in particular the young lady in the orange overalls off to the right...

(Just spent ages trying to find that photo - I knew I had it somewhere!)
