I have a 10-20 which I use quite a lot for car shows. However, with the pop-up flash, a shadow of the lens can be seen in photos so I'm looking at a flash.

The sb400 would suit due to it size and s/h value but would it overcome the shadow issue ?

Any help appreciated
 
Not 100% sure, but I think it will, I will do a few test photos later at 10mm with my sb400
 
I just tested my Sigma 10-20mm and my SB400 at both 10mm and 20mm and aiming the flash straight forward or straight up and there was no shadow.

This was on my D7000, but will be the same as the D3100.

why not buy a YN 560 II?

a third of the price, can bounce it, take it off the camera. i bought a sb 400 then realised how quickly you out grow it, so i sold it and got the yn 560 II never looked back
 
To be honest, I've no experience of flash so haven't heard of it.

Is it an eBay-job or available elsewhere ?

Edit - I see its not TTL...

best think is to play if your shooting in the same club it wouldnt take you long to get the settings spot on

all the settings there is on the manual yn 560 ii
is flash power eg, 1/1 1/32 1/128 etc and focal lenth your shooting at,
you will also be able to shoot in portrait and still bounce as it swivels and rotates,
takes no time at all to get use to the manual flash

they sell them on amazon under £60 you would benfit from a diffusor aswell
 
I have the SB400 and have partly outgrown it, but I keep it.

It is the smallest flash on the market and comes with me everywhere.

I have the Jessops 360 flash which is basically manual and I didn't get on with it, kept it though for light painting etc.

I have now got the SB600, has the benefits of the SB400 by being full time ITTL, but you can fully rotate and aim it.
 
I'd prefer iTTL to be honest - at this stage, I want to make it easy for myself. I don't do " loads " of flash work, just some - hence this consideration.
 
Stay iTTL, it makes life a lot easier if you don't want to think about it :)
