Hi,
I am thinking of buying the Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 Canon fit. But I have heard/read a lot of people having problems with them, and on some occasions actually having 2 or 3 lenses before getting a good one.

So how do you know if you have a good one or not? Is there something specific to look out for? Are the problems all the same. Any help/info would be great.

Thank you.

Neil

There's some quality variation reported on the net (mostly lack of sharpness in 1/2 the frame), but I got a good one (Nikon-fit) first time. I've read far more reports of QC issues with the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8, but if I were to buy the Sigma or the Tokina now I'd still chance the Tokina.

I have the sigma 10-20mm for my Canon outfit. I love it. I never heard of any problems before. I guess i was just lucky?

You can see some examples of its capability on my website. See the Peak District images, North Wales Images, and some of the others too.

Steven.

Someone else with a Canon fit one here too.

I love it, and have had no problems with it.

Its like all Sigma lenses, you can get a 'Friday Lens' but my Nikon fit was spot on when I got it 2 years ago.

There are tests you can do to check when it arrives, the most popular one seems to be to mount it on a tripod pointed at a plain brick wall, making sure its dead level, then take several shots at varying apertures from wide open to closed down apertures and at various focal lengths, being careful not to disturb its position as you adjust it. This should show up any one-sided softness and excessive barrel distortion [there maybe a small amount of distortion inherent with such a wide angle, but another complaint that used to crop up was more on one side than the other though not seen that one for a while] and allow you to compare the various shots. If you are are concerned you can always post a few shots here to see what experienced users think.

I love mine here is a shot from it on my old 300D

Thank you very much this is what I was looking for.

Thank you to everybody for their replies. Its reassuring to know that there are no problems with your Sigmas. Great pics aswell by the way:)

Total gash - buy a Tokina 11-16 or 12-24 instead...

(**The doctor has told me to cut down on my diet of sweeping statements ;)**)

I've gtot a Canon fit and it's spot on. Don't use it as much as I thought I would though.

Well, I went through 2 copies before I got my good 'un. First one had a smudge mark on the underneath of the front element, the second had tiny particles of metal/glass under the front element.

The one I ended up with is great, a fab lens. My advice would be buy it in a shop where you can check it out before handing over the ££, buy one from a reputable UK internet dealer (RGB, Amazon, Mifsuds etc) that have a good return policy or thirdly buy one off the classifieds here on TP

Hi,

Thank you again for you thoughts on this lens. I am going to purchase it just looking aroung for the best deal. :)

I bought mine from Kerso on here - no problems

hmmm... do you reckon he would save you the hassle and sort you out a good copy before sending it to you ?

seems to be the only reason I am heading for the canon, is I dont want to take the risk of a bad sigma

i have the sigma and was thoroughly pleased with it, except for the fact it sits at home in the box....i really don't use it as much as i thought i would.

just found out this will work on my 1d....a new lease of life me thinks :-)
