Sigma 100-300 f/4 all rounder?

At the moment the only lens I have in that focal length is the Tamron 70-300 which I don't often use. I was looking at getting the Sigma 100-300 to cover a similar focal length but with improved IQ and speed. I would like to use the lens for personal use, I like to sometimes take a sunday afternoon shooting the birds in the garden and would use the lens for this (f/4 or faster is needed as shooting through double glazed glass often in poor light. I also sometime in winter shoot my mates rugby matches just for fun so would use this lens (possibly with 1.4x TC) and also love motorsport such as BTCC and would like to go to such places next year as a spectator and take some shots but need the right kit.

As far as the usual stuff goes with my portraits would this lens be any good in relation to the Nikon 70-200 2.8 (obviously not comparing IQ etc. Just effectivness)

What I was ultimately wondering is how does this lens fare as an alround lens for those reasons and anyone recommend it and pros and cons. I was looking at buying second hand also to save cost.

Ahh cheers, thanks for the advice. Well I did look at the 120-300 2.8 but at £1k I could get a used 70-200 2.8 vr1 however not sure thay would be enough reach for all uses. I would also like to keep the price down aswell which is why I went towards the 100-300.
 
I had the 100-300mm F4

It was an excellent lens - it is now with a friend of mine who also rates it very highly. It is the perfect compromise between weight and aperture - and the image quality is superb to boot.
 
Thanks for the advice, I have been searching on ebay for them and theres not an awful lot so will keep a close eye out on here, have seen a couple up for grabs in the last few months. Would love to get to more motorsport events next year and get some shots!
