Has anyone had or used this lens,if so how did you find it?
 
Fantastic lens on older Nikon bodies, it needs re-chipping for some never ones but wont work with the latest gen D750/800 models, AF is really twitchy and it cant be rechipped for these, buyer beware on new cameras
 
It would be a d7100 I've been edging towards the nikon 300 afs f4 really, seen the sigma so wondering, looks a heavy lens?
 
So which is better I suspect the prime?
 
Used the middle version (there were 3) on Pentax. They are hens teeth in that !ount because no one sells them when they have one. Great lens, but as expected for the speed and length, heavy.
 
Is the older af version still worth getting? Very good deals on minty ones
 
Fantastic lens, I've no idea why nothing like it is produced today, pretty much perfect middle ground between consumer zooms and the big money 2.8s.

On Pentax and Sony mounts they are like hens teeth, and as mentioned they need to be checked on newer Nikon models. I've owned newer and older versions on a few mounts (Sony, Nikon and Canon) and not noticed any difference between them to be honest.
 
I had one on my Sony A700 several years ago. It was quite a nice lens and worked well with a Sigma 1.4x TC too. The only shortcoming I found with it was that it was awful when at or near minimum focus. I sold it on after getting the Sony 70-400mm G which was sharper. Following Sony's adoption of SLT mirrors I've since switched to Nikon and have stuck to Nikon lenses throughout. Although the Sigma 100-300 was ok I've had other Sigma lenses that were a let down with regard to reliability and would be very reluctant to get another, particularly one that is second hand and without a warranty. For me, it'd be a Nikon prime every time, or if you're a Canon man then the Canon 300mm F4 is a great lens too.

I got a great deal on a mint 300f4 afs so happy :-D
