Looking for a lens....

ok guys, ive migrated from Olympus to Canon - should be getting a 60d next week with a 'nifty fifty'

My interest is nature photography (badgers mainly, but also birds)

On my Oly I used the 50-200mm f 2.8-3.5 (100-400mm eq) Zuiko SWD which was ok, but could have done with a teeny bit more reach - though isnt that always the case!

When i'm shooting the badgers this is done in daylight, though the forest canopy makes it darker.

Wide open at 3.5 I got good results at iso 400 (my E510 got noticably noisey at 800 and above)

The 60d should handle higher iso better so i'm factoring that in when looking for a lens though I dont want to go slower than f4

Budget is circa £800 - though at a push this could go up by £100

What I am looking for is a lens that will fulfill my nature requirements but will also be handy as and when other subjects present themselves - such as sports and a trip to the mach loop!

I've seen the following :

Sigma 100-300mm f/4 DG APO HSM EX DG at a good price
Canon 70-200mm f2.8 which is about there budget-wise

I know I said I wanted a little more reach but I'm guessing at f2.8 the canon will more than able to take a teleconverter later and still stay fast.

Neither lens has IS which might be an issue, though I tend to shoot with a mono or tripod (manily mono for the badgers as i can move easier)

Have you guys had any experince of the Sigma and the image quality it can provide - especially wide open at 300mm?

Also are there any other lenses I've not considered, which you think I should?

- dont really want a prime as I like the flexibility of a zoom.

Firm called Great Western Cameras have been advertising these brand new or refurb on the bay for usually around £600, proper UK stock and so they qualify for the Sigma 3 year warranty. I bought mine from em about 6 months ago, cracking piece o glass for the money, they've not got any on right now, but watch out for em.
 
I usually have the 1.4 tc permanently attached to mine for motor sport. :thumbs:
 
100-300 with a fast aperture is a really nice wildlife range on a crop sensor. That is one that I'm looking at right now. I'd love to have the 120-300, but it is expensive and big. I think the 100-300 would be great with a 1.4 on the side.

I have the sigma 100-300, its an awesome lens, pin sharp wide open too. I do have a sigma 1.4 tele and i will say you do lose a bit on the image quality but its tack sharp wide open, and that more than makes up for it!
 
The Siggy 100-300 is good, but the 120-300mm f/2.8 leaves it behind; for your budget you might not be far off a secondhand copy

Where can you get a 120-300 for 800 ish? I've been looking at the various lenses listed in this thread and didn't see anywhere with that deal.

Keep your eye out on here as the 120-300 mm's come up now and again. I got a mint DG one with a filter and a 2x TC for £1k (filter and TC are approx £200 used).
