Sigma 105mm 2.8 Macro

Hi, anyone have and use this for general stuff aswell as macro? how does it perfrom (mainly portrait) ? with the limiter on does it focus quite quick?

Thanks, I am on 4/3rds so 2x factor making it 210mm but feel free to comment if on any other system.

I wouldn't imagine it focusses very quick.
My 150mm that has HSM (the 105 lacks) still focusses pretty slow with the limiter. Macro lenses generally don't focus fast.

For portraits, I would personally prefer the sigma 70mm macro. Shorter length (140mm on your 2x), and razor blade sharp wide open. Still won't focus very fast though.

think I am out with the focal length as I was initially thinking 'I always see pros with long lenses shooting portrait' but of course when the brain had kicked in I realised they also shoot full frame..

would have considered the 70mm but I dont think it is available 4/3rd mount.

Hi Strumstrum...

I have the Sigma 105mm macro and have used it for both macro and portraits... quality is sharp, bokeh is fab.. .. i have used it for weddings on a second body to get candid portraits. Initially, i bought it primarily for macro work... i was looking at the Tamron SP90 but then decided to go for the extra focal length to keep that bit of distance between myself and the subject.. also, a friends recommendation helped me veer that way too... The focussing isn't fantastically quick, but it's never really caused me any problems... there is a manual focussing option too which i have actually used more often for macro work..

Here are a couple of examples shot with that lens........the second was using a D70s body...

One thing to keep in mind is obviously shooting portraits in a small room will be very difficult due to the focal length.. ... I have a 50mm 1.8 in the bag now, so i'll be using that more often..... still keep the 105mm for macro though...
