Morning All,

I have just ordered the Sigma macro 105 EX DG from London Camera Exchange and anxiously awaiting Mr Postie to Deliver

Any tips on how to get the best out of this lens, I have a Canon 550d and a Sunpak PF30x flash and a set of Auto-focus macro rings

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Be patient. I've got that lens and it's ace. If you're not used to taking macro photos, it's a bit of a pain until you use a tripod. I've gotten some nice photos from mine, but hardly anything very macro like, as it's also quite good as a normal lens too :)

I've got some rubbish photos uploaded, mainly for the photo52 thing I'm doing. Irritatingly, the better quality photos that I didn't get around to uploading are on my dead hard drive :(

Congrats on your 105 Stephen, youll love it, try it without the rings at first, then add the rings as its a different ball game with them on :thumbs: focal plain rules in macro, it can make or break a shot :thumbs:
 
My advice, if you never tried macro seriously before, is as follows;

Manual focus only and make the final adjustments by moving backwards and forwards slightly.
Aperture around f/11 until you get a little more adept at judging the DoF requirements for more creative stuff.
Practice on static subjects before you go chasing flies and grasshoppers.

My macros improved dramatically when I set up a simple flash rig, got my ideas here:

I don't use a tripod, at least not for insects. Manual settings such as lowish ISO(100-200), F stop at about 8-11 or even smaller and shutter speed at least 200th/sec.
Adjust flash exposure compensation as required.

When I had your lens I found I had to manual focus as I found it slow to AF but razor sharp!
