Sigma 105mm macro lens

I am seriously considering buying one to pair with my D3300,it seems to have good reviews.

Should i be considering any other macro lens at this FL or would this be ideal with the D3300.

A very well respected lens for the money, used one for a while superb lens, go for it.
 
On this theme, is there optically any difference between the OS and non-OS versions of this lens ?

I mean in terms of performance not in terms of optical formula ?

I am considering one of these or a Canon 100f2.8ISL.

Don't discount the non IS Canon f2.8.
I have one and it's sharper than my 400 f5.6 and 70-200 f2.8 IS II!! a real pleasure to use at nearly half the price of the IS version!

I have owned both Canon 100f2.8 IS and non-IS lenese in the past.

I do though wonder how the Sigma OS version compares ?

The Sigma OS is about the same price new as the Canon non-IS so if I get the OS free without compromising IQ it would be ideal.

Hi Gary
I haven't used the Sigma to compare, but i do know a few members have and rate it (the Sigma OS) just as good. (y)
I've thought about upgrading mine a few times over the 2 years i've owned it, but can never justify spending an extra £2-300 just for weather sealing and IS!
Plus, maybe my copy is an exceptionally sharp one, and i might be spending more on an inferior lens!!!:rolleyes:

Hi Gary,

Optically IQ wise all the Macro lenses are very similar, but if you want even more IQ if on crop would need to look at Manual focus lens like the Venus or Tamron f2 60mm :D

The images I have seen from the Tamron 60mm f2 (plus colour rendition looks spot on) are sharper than then the longer focal length I have seen more detail is retained I suspect it has more to do with actually being physically closer to the subject.

What has been neglected to be asked;

  1. What do you want to shoot with the lens? Size etc
  2. Purpose for the lens?
As to FL it depends on the above to what focal length you want. :) so answer those questions to start and I can advise as best I can.
 
I used a friends Sigma 105 f2.8 macro lens on a Canon 550D and was amazed by the detail in the shots so started looking for a macro lens myself. I eventually ended up with a Canon 100mm f2.8L IS macro lens and that is excellent for me due to the IS (I quite often use it as a long portrait lens too) but there's not a lot of difference between the two lenses in IQ. The length is good for shooting insects etc. as you don't have to get right on top of the subject either.

ok i want to shoot flowers and maybe insects but not so bothered and maybe have an experiment with different subjects, also because i have an 85mm thought the 105 would make a nice compliment to that,the 60 would be ok but thought a longer FL would be a good addition for portraits and the odd squirrel sitting in the tree.

so what do you think?
 
I posted on here a couple of weeks ago seeking advice on which macro to go for .I have ordered a sigma 105 mm hsm and am eagerly awaiting the man from UPS as I speak , cant wait !
 
Ok for that I would go with 105mm sigma but if you are shooting natural light might want to look at 150-180 sigmas.

100mm range is a very nice portrait length imo though 150-180 would do well too to compress the background.

Are you planning on using handheld or mono/tripod?

Hi, I got a Tokina AT-X Pro 100 f2.8 and it gets great reviews and im really glad I got it.
Just have a look at the comparisons with other lens against this.
 
Well the longer focal length 150-180mm are heavy bits of kit. But saying that with 105mm with flash etc it will also be heavy.

Not just 'for the money', for everything!

It's probably the best sub £1k macro lens out there at present.
 
Well , it came today , whoop whoop, I was going to have a play in the garden but it is absolutley hammering it down .
So no piccys yet , but I have to say I am really impressed, lovely lens , feels really well made and the piccys from my little play in the Conservatory look really good .
Best of all I only paid £325. for it including delivery from Germany , Brand new , sealed with euro warranty.
Feeling nearly as smug as David Cameron !
