Hi, I have both FF and crop Canon (1ds mk II + 600D)
As I understand it the Sigma 12-24mm F/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II will be usable on both but is there an alternative that can give me a view of under 24mm and can be used on both FF and crop?

I can confirm that the Sigma 12-24 works very well on both FF and crop bodies. Not sure if there are any Canon fit alternatives. Best to check the actual lens you'll be buying before payment.
 
I was looking the 12-24 for my 5D but after trying 4 lenses I gave up as all were either soft on one side or were back focusing. I have bought a good Canon 17-40L from here recently which is a fantastic lens, I may look for a sigma again in a bit, but the canon will do for now.

I have the original 12-24mm and I'm happy with it on my 5D. On my 20D it easily outperformed a Canon 10-22mm.

I also have a Canon 20-35mm USM. It's a cheapo lens and doesn't get great reviews but I'm happy with it. It's compact and light, the USM seems to be good and it seems to give good enough results. I bought it to use on my 35mm SLR and 20D and it performed well enough on both, I haven't used it much on my 5D but again it seems ok.

I also have the 17-40mm but as you no on a crop it goes to approx 27-64mm
the advantage I can see for the 12-24mm apart from the approx 19mm on a crop is the 12mm on a FF camera (probably be better at around 15-16mm range)

The only alternative is tokina 12-24mm. It will work happily from 18mm (hood off) on 1Ds, and IQ is better than sigma or 17-40. In fact, I am getting another one of these and will get rid of 17-40 as soon as I can.

Hi, sorry but can you confirm that the Tokina 12-24mm will work on a 1Ds MK II as all I can find is stating that it is for Canon APS-C also it looks a good contender as it will take filters and the Sigma has a bulbous front lens so you cannot use a filter system.

The Sigma 12-24mm will take filters if you leave the bucket in place. It'll get into the way until the longer focal lengths but at exactly what point it doesn't get in the way will depend on what you use.

Can't say how many times I've read that on line and it simply isn't true. The 12-24mm can use filters with the bucket in place at longer focal lengths or what some people do is hold or otherwise fix the filter in place. Another question is what filters give good results at these wide focal lengths.

seems to be... the second one is f/4 and I can't fault it at 100%. 18mm is min if you want a full frame, and you are better of with MF as I found af both unnecessary not very precise.

At what focal length on FF exactly it will not vignette? It doesn't look like it will be any wide setting... And I believe sharpness is no better than the stupid 17-40

At exactly what focal length? As I said, it obviously depends exactly what you put on the front of the lens :help: :D

It's an option... just as using an APS-C lens on FF and being restricted to 18mm+ is an option.

I am sure everyone here would benefit from a some additional details or even a few specific isolated examples. It is not immediately obvious from that picture.

The Sigma 12-24 with a filter in the bucket starts vignetting at 16mm on a D700 in crop mode - the 10-20 is a better choice (IMO) for crop users who want to use filters.
Pols on UWAs give uneven polarisation on skies, especially at certain angles to the sun and when it's low in the sky. Grads can be BluTaked to the (fixed) hood of the 12-24 but beware of flare! Plain coloured (or ND) gels can be cut to size (using the template provided) and slipped into the holder behind the rear element.
