OK, I fancy a bit of extreme wide-angle action, and I'm tempted to get one of these for my spiffy new 5D mk II.. any owners care to share opinions?

I've only bought Canon's own lenses so far, so I'd also be interested in opinions on buying third-party glass. Are Siggy lenses 100% compatible with Canon's electronics? (I've heard things about older Siggies not working properly and needing to be re-chipped.)

TIA :)

I use the 12-24 on a 5D and it's totally compatible. The Sigma's with communication issues are much older and usually designed with only film bodies in mind.

As for is it any good? That's a tough question. The overall sharpness, colour and general image quality can be scarily poor, possibly even worse than the siggy 10-20. The build quality is great though and it's a really heavy and solid bit of kit.

There is the fact that on a FF frame body you can't use a front mounted filter, you can use a cut gel at the rear but there is nothing you can put there that you can't do quicker in PP.

Overall, whilst it's lacking in many IQ areas, there isn't any other choice of superwide zooms for a full frame canon. So when it can do a job that nothing else can, I can forgive it all it's shortcomings. I use it very very rarely as I have a 17-40 and only use the siggy when I have an impossibly tight interior to shoot.

It' is alot of fun out and about sometimes and can turn a simple group in a field to a dramatic scene. The double green strip path at the top of the "V" in the mid ground is actually no more than 3 paces from the camera and you could throw a stick at the tress.

Thanks  I get the impression that this lens is a bit like a talking dog - one should be impressed that it exists at all, rather than expecting perfection :D

That said, it's a bit worrying that Sigma's quality control allows for so much variation in samples. This is one purchase I might make from a bricks-and-mortar shop so I can make sure I'm getting a good one.

Keep a check you get a good copy, they are great lenses IMO, good build quality but suffer fron distortion down the right hand side, Decentering occurs on alot of them so test to make sure both sides are sharp

take a sample shot of a brick wall and then another with the camera upside down (180 degrees) and compare them, make sure both are sharp and not one side sharper than the other

other than that enjoy

its a bulky beast but with good light the results can be quite pleasing:

taken with that lens and a Canon 5D body.

on my copy - no longer have it now - don't recall any issues regarding and electronics issue with the canon body. found it was a bit prone to lens flare.
